Islamabad to Ban Vehicles Without M-Tag from January 1

ISLAMABAD – Starting January 1, all vehicles entering Islamabad must have an M-Tag, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed. The new rule is part of Islamabad’s smart city and security enhancements.

Speaking at the Safe City Headquarters, Naqvi said the M-Tag system will strengthen traffic control and enhance citizen safety. Authorities have been directed to ensure full compliance from the start of the new year.

The M-Tag acts as a digital vehicle identification tool, allowing real-time monitoring and reducing unauthorized entry. Vehicles without a valid M-Tag will be denied access to Islamabad’s main entry points.

Naqvi emphasized that Islamabad is evolving into Pakistan’s first fully integrated smart city. The M-Tag initiative will integrate with advanced surveillance systems, supporting law enforcement and traffic management.

During his visit to the Safe City control room, Naqvi reviewed the digital monitoring wall, assessing public safety operations and security mechanisms. He highlighted the role of technology in maintaining law and order and improving emergency responses.

Minister of State Talal Chaudhry accompanied Naqvi and stressed the importance of public cooperation. He said the M-Tag will not only enhance city security but also streamline traffic flow and urban planning efforts.

Authorities are conducting awareness campaigns to educate vehicle owners about obtaining the M-Tag before January 1. The initiative will also help reduce congestion and support data-driven management of Islamabad’s road networks.

The M-Tag system is expected to fully integrate with the Capital Smart City project, combining digital monitoring, surveillance, and automated entry systems. This step aims to create a safer, more efficient, and technologically advanced city environment.
