The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has issued a public warning about online scams ahead of New Year celebrations. Citizens are urged to remain cautious and protect themselves from fraud attempts.
According to NCCIA, fraudsters often exploit festive occasions to target users. Fake congratulatory messages and links promising gifts are circulating widely online. These deceptive tactics are designed to trick people into falling victim to online scams.
The agency advised users not to click on suspicious links or share personal information with unknown contacts. โStay vigilant and verify any New Year-related messages before responding,โ officials said. The alert aims to reduce the rising number of digital fraud cases during the holiday season.
In addition to New Year scams, NCCIA highlighted the increasing hacking of WhatsApp accounts. The agency has issued emergency protocols to help users regain access if their accounts are compromised.
Officials explained that if your WhatsApp account is hacked, you should immediately uninstall and reinstall the app. Enter your phone number to receive a six-digit verification code via SMS. Inputting this code logs the hacker out automatically, as WhatsApp allows only one active session per device.
If the hacker has enabled โTwo-Step Verificationโ and the PIN is unknown, users may need to wait seven days. During this time, messages remain secure, and no one can access your account. NCCIA stressed that following these steps can prevent further unauthorized access.
The agency emphasized that public awareness is key to preventing online scams. Users should regularly update passwords, enable security features, and stay alert to unusual activity.
As New Year approaches, the NCCIA alert serves as a timely reminder for everyone to stay vigilant online. By following simple safety measures, citizens can enjoy celebrations without falling prey to fraudsters.
