A young motorcyclist was injured after falling into a sinkhole in Karachi’s Orangi Town area. The incident occurred near Urdu Chowk on the night of December 29. Police said the rider was overspeeding when he lost control and fell into the open pit.
The sinkhole formed at a site where excavation had been carried out for a water supply line. Residents reported that the excavation work was done about one and a half months ago. They also said there were no warning signs or barriers around the pit, creating a serious risk for commuters.
A video of the accident has gone viral, showing the motorcyclist falling into the sinkhole. Authorities responded quickly after the footage circulated online. Repair work at the site has already begun to prevent further accidents.
This incident highlights ongoing safety concerns in Karachi’s streets. Earlier this year, an eight-year-old boy tragically died after falling into an uncovered manhole in Korangi’s Mehran Town. The boy, identified as Dilbar Ali, fell into a manhole filled with wastewater while playing.
Rescue teams attempted to save him, but he died at the scene. His body was later taken to a hospital for legal and medical procedures.
Officials admitted that municipal authorities were not present at the Korangi site during the incident. Residents and experts warn that unmarked pits, open excavations, and sinkholes pose major dangers. They called for stricter monitoring and immediate action by the relevant departments.
Police urge commuters to remain cautious while driving, especially near construction or excavation areas. The recent sinkhole incident in Orangi Town underlines the need for better public safety measures. Authorities have promised to improve signage, fencing, and monitoring to prevent similar accidents in the future.
