ISLAMABAD: Islamic scholar Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza has shared a detailed account of former prime minister Imran Khan’s jail conditions. He challenged claims made by both the government and the PTI. Mirza said most public narratives are exaggerated and factually incorrect.
Mirza shared his views during a Geo News programme on Friday night. He spoke to senior anchor Shahzeb Khanzada. He said he recently spent time in Adiala jail. His cell was located next to Imran Khan’s enclosure.
The scholar said Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023. He is serving sentences in multiple cases. He is also facing trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act. These cases relate to the May 9 protests.
The discussion follows recent claims by Imran Khan’s sons. They alleged their father was kept in a death cell. They described the conditions as harsh and inhumane. Kasim Khan said the conditions were “awful” during an interview. His brother Sulaiman claimed power cuts and dirty water were routine.
Engineer Mirza rejected these descriptions. He said they do not fully reflect reality. He explained that Imran Khan’s jail area consists of six cells. Each cell measures around 10 by 12 feet. One cell is used by an orderly. One is used for living. The remaining cells store personal items.
Mirza said the former prime minister is frustrated due to prolonged detention. He described him as mentally exhausted. He said anyone would feel the same after two years. He added that frustration does not mean total isolation.
He recalled hearing Imran Khan’s voice during walks. Other inmates confirmed it was him. A prison staff member later explained a minor adjustment due to noise issues.
Mirza also described daily routines. He said breakfast is served around 9am. Imran Khan often discusses cricket with his orderly. Lunch is prepared in the afternoon. Mirza noted the smell of desi ghee during cooking.
He said inmates have access to newspapers and television. He confirmed this facility was also available to him. He denied claims that these services were exclusive.
Addressing another case period, Mirza said Imran Khan was visibly angry then. He spoke loudly at times. However, Mirza avoided sharing sensitive details. He said public comments could cause problems.
The scholar denied claims of strict isolation. He said the area is well known. Many high-profile prisoners stayed there before. He confirmed regular medical check-ups.
