The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to Ismail Dahiri, a former special assistant to the Chief Minister of Sindh and estranged leader of the Peopleโs Party.
During the hearing, Justice Jamal Mandokhel questioned the repeated description of the accused as โpowerful.โ Justice Musarrat Hilali also asked, โWho is he that he is considered very powerful?โ
Defence counsel argued that Ismail Dahiri has been falsely implicated. They claimed the Home Minister had registered 15 FIRs against him and that he was trapped in a fabricated case.
The government lawyer requested the court to adjourn proceedings, stating that the case record had not yet reached the bench. Justice Mandokhel criticized this delay, saying it was the responsibility of authorities to summon the file.
The complainantโs counsel alleged that the accused had kept the daughter of the complainant in forced custody. The defence countered that Ismail Dahiri was only implicated based on the statement of one prosecution witness.
The court noted that while seven people were killed in the incident, the accused was not named in the initial case record. Justice Mandokhel remarked that if he had been involved, his name would have appeared from the start. Twenty-two other individuals were initially nominated in the case, but Ismail Dahiri was not among them.
After reviewing arguments from both sides, the Supreme Court granted bail to Ismail Dahiri on a surety bond of one lac rupees.
The decision comes amid ongoing scrutiny of political figures and their alleged involvement in high-profile cases. Legal experts say the bail highlights the importance of thorough evidence and the rights of accused individuals in Pakistanโs judicial system.
Authorities have yet to comment on the next steps, including the ongoing investigation and potential summoning of other witnesses.
