Wheat prices have surged sharply over the past ten days in Punjab and Islamabad, reaching record highs. According to market sources, the rate per maund rose from Rs3,700 to Rs4,400, reflecting a sudden surge in demand and limited supply.
In Lahore, traders report a shortage of 10kg and 20kg flour bags. The price of a 15kg bag has jumped from Rs1,500 to Rs1,750. Wheat prices in the city now touch Rs4,450 per maund.
Other major cities are also facing soaring wheat rates. In Gujranwala and Gujrat, prices have climbed up to Rs4,500 per maund, while Rawalpindi reports wheat at Rs4,800 per maund. Multan sees rates of Rs4,450, and Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan have recorded prices at Rs4,400 per maund. Islamabad is also experiencing the surge, with wheat selling at Rs4,400 per maund.
Asim Raza, Central Chairman of the Flour Mills Association, attributed the surge to a growing shortage of wheat. He warned that the wheat supply is rapidly depleting, which is pushing flour prices higher.
Raza noted that the combination of limited stock and rising demand has created pressure on the entire supply chain. โThe price surge is not limited to Punjab; it could soon impact the national market if supplies are not restored,โ he said.
Consumers are feeling the impact as daily staples like flour become more expensive. Retailers report that the surge has prompted panic buying in some areas, further straining availability.
Authorities are being urged to monitor wheat stocks closely and take steps to stabilize the market. The Flour Mills Association also called for timely government intervention to prevent the surge from affecting household budgets further.
