A tragic accident in Sargodha has left at least 14 people dead and nine others injured. The incident occurred when a truck carrying passengers plunged into a canal amid dense fog in the Gulpur area of Tehsil Kot Momin.
Rescue officials confirmed that the deceased included women and children, all from the same family from the Khanuana area of Faisalabad. The family was returning home after attending a funeral in Islamabad. Among the victims, five were children, intensifying the grief for relatives.
The accident happened as the truck was forced to take a local route via Kot Momin due to motorway closure caused by heavy fog. Near the Gulpur bridge, visibility sharply decreased, causing the driver to lose control. The truck veered off the road and fell into a canal, which had little to no water at the time, resulting in a severe impact.
A total of 23 people were on board when the accident occurred. Rescue teams arrived promptly and recovered the bodies of 14 victims. Nine others were injured, with three reported in serious condition. The injured were taken to Kot Momin THQ Hospital and DHQ Hospital for medical treatment. Dr. Mehrban, MS at THQ Kot Momin, confirmed that three patients remained in critical condition.
The deceased have been identified as Misri Khan, Halima Bibi, Yasin, Sonia Bibi, Pathan Bibi, Haniya, Iman Fatima, Rani Bibi, Haris, Waseem, Noreen, Saqlain, Huram, and Amina. Injured patients include Shamim, Parveen, Nazia Bibi, Hasnain, Zaheer, Mumtaz, Kashif, and Nadeem Abbas.
Authorities completed the rescue operation and said investigations are ongoing. Police and local officials highlighted that fog-related accidents are increasing across Punjab. They urged drivers to exercise extreme caution, particularly on alternative routes during poor visibility conditions.
