Skardu was covered with a thick sheet of snow, with accumulation ranging from three to five inches in urban and upper mountainous areas. Minimum temperatures dropped to minus eight degrees Celsius in city areas and minus 13 in the mountains.
The recent snowfall has also blanketed trees, roads, and local landscapes in Swat. Authorities have urged residents to stay cautious while traveling due to slippery conditions.
The Met Office had earlier predicted that a shallow westerly wave would approach the northern parts of the country on January 16. The system is expected to persist until January 19, strengthen from January 20, and affect most parts of the country by January 21.
The Met Office forecast rainfall with thunderstorms and light to moderate snowfall in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Light rain and snow are also expected in Murree, Galliyat, and nearby areas from January 18 to 20.
In Skardu and nearby regions, snow accumulation reached up to five inches, affecting both city streets and mountain trails. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure safety.
Residents are advised to prepare for ongoing cold conditions. Snowfall of five inches or more in some areas may disrupt local travel and daily activities. Officials warn travelers to check road conditions before heading out.
The recent weather event highlights the impact of winter storms in northern Pakistan. Authorities and citizens are keeping a close watch as the westerly wave strengthens and moves across the region.
The Met Office continues to monitor snowfall and rainfall patterns. Updates are expected in the coming days as the system affects additional northern and central regions.
