Lahore University Student Released from Hospital After Suicide Attempt

Fatima, a 21-year-old student of the University of Lahore, was discharged from hospital on Saturday following a successful spine surgery after her attempted suicide on January 5, 2026.

The student, enrolled in the D. Pharmacy program, attempted suicide by jumping from the second floor of the university building. She sustained severe injuries, including fractures to both legs and other body parts. Fatima was initially admitted to the General Hospital of Lahore and later transferred to the Punjab Institute of Neurosciences for specialized treatment.

She remained under medical care for 12 days before being discharged and returning home. University authorities had immediately formed a high-level inquiry committee, including senior faculty and management officers, to investigate the incident.

Police investigations revealed that Fatima was under pressure from her family to continue her studies despite finding the D. Pharmacy course challenging. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from cameras inside and around the university to determine the full sequence of events.

Investigators also noted that the student had been on a phone call for 27 minutes before the incident and had deleted the record of her last call. Reports indicate that Fatima did not attend her morning class and was reportedly upset after scoring 18 out of 35 marks on a test, a matter she had discussed with her father and brother.

Police stated that further progress in the case will depend on recording Fatima’s statement once she fully recovers. The university and law enforcement agencies are working together to ensure that proper counseling and support are provided to the student.
