Thousands of people gathered in Denmark on Saturday to protest against former US President Donald Trump’s renewed comments about taking control of Greenland. The demonstrations were held in Copenhagen and other major cities, drawing strong public attention.
Protesters waved Danish and Greenlandic flags outside Copenhagen City Hall. Many chanted slogans calling for respect for Greenland’s sovereignty. The rallies were organised under the banner “Hands Off Greenland”, a message aimed directly at opposing Trump’s remarks.
The protests came a day after Trump warned that he could impose tariffs on countries that block his plans related to Greenland. Greenland is an autonomous territory under Denmark and holds strategic and mineral importance. Trump’s comments sparked concern among Greenlanders and Danish citizens.
Thousands had confirmed participation on social media. Demonstrations were also planned in Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense, and Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. In Nuuk, protesters planned to march toward the US consulate while holding Greenlandic flags. Organisers said the aim was to defend democracy and human rights.
Uagut, an association of Greenlanders living in Denmark, said the Hands Off Greenland protests were meant to send a clear and peaceful message. The group stressed the importance of unity and calm during rising tensions.
Uagut chairwoman Julie Rademacher said recent events had placed pressure on Greenlanders both in Denmark and Greenland. She urged people to stand together and avoid further division. Other organisers said the protests showed support for elected leaders and diplomats.
Public opinion strongly opposes any US takeover. A January 2025 poll showed that 85 percent of Greenlanders reject joining the United States. Only six percent supported the idea.
The protests also coincided with a visit by a bipartisan US congressional delegation to Copenhagen. US Senator Chris Coons said Greenland does not face immediate security threats. He added that Arctic security matters should be addressed through cooperation, not pressure.
Trump has previously criticised Denmark, claiming it does not do enough to protect Greenland. However, Greenland falls under NATO’s security framework. European NATO members recently announced joint military exercises in the Arctic to show commitment to regional security.

As protests continue, Hands Off Greenland has become a powerful symbol of resistance. Demonstrators say the issue goes beyond politics and concerns international law, sovereignty, and respect for people’s rights.
