SBCA Acts On Gul Plaza Fire, Announces Significant Decision

The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has taken an important decision regarding fire safety in commercial buildings. The authority has directed builders and property owners to implement fire safety measures immediately.

Officials said the SBCA informed the Chairman of the Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan (ABAD) in writing. Builders and owners must follow the fire safety measures identified during recent audits.

Fire safety audits were conducted on six buildings in the South and East districts on Tuesday. SBCA officials confirmed that notices will also be issued to commercial centres. They must install proper fire prevention and firefighting systems within the stipulated timeframe.

The SBCA gave builders and property owners three days to comply. Officials stressed that the measures are essential in the public interest. Any commercial building found without operational fire safety systems after the deadline will be sealed.

The authority emphasized that fire prevention and safety equipment must be installed in all commercial buildings. Officials called the implementation of these measures an important decision to protect lives and property.

In a related statement, the SBCA clarified that all records of Gul Plaza are fully intact. The authority rejected claims that legal or construction documents were missing. The building, originally constructed in the 1970s, was revised and approved under various ordinances over the years.

Gul Plazaโ€™s approved structure includes a basement, ground, first, second, and third floors, with a total of 1,102 shops legally sanctioned. The building also features 16 staircases and emergency exits, all constructed in accordance with approved regulations.

SBCA officials said the enforcement of fire safety measures and the protection of building records demonstrate the authorityโ€™s commitment to public safety. The decision to act swiftly on fire safety is seen as an important decision for the community.

Authorities continue to monitor compliance and urged builders and commercial property owners to act promptly. The SBCA stressed that safety cannot be compromised, and this important decision reinforces strict adherence to fire regulations.
