Maria B Opens First Store in Dhaka, Becomes First International Women’s Brand in Bangladesh

DHAKA: Pakistani fashion label Maria B has officially opened its first retail outlet in Dhaka. This launch marks a major milestone for Bangladesh’s fashion industry. It is the first time an international women’s clothing brand has established an official store in the country.

Bangladesh is the world’s second-largest exporter of ready-made garments after China. The country produces clothing for major global brands. These include H&M, Zara, and Uniqlo. However, most foreign brands do not operate official retail stores in Bangladesh. Their products often reach local markets as factory leftovers or through unofficial channels.

The arrival of Maria B changes this trend. The brand has now become the first high-end international women’s fashion house to enter the Bangladeshi retail market. Until now, the only foreign clothing brand with a physical presence was J., a Pakistani family clothing label founded by the late Junaid Jamshed.

Local fashion professionals have welcomed the move. Shahrukh Amin, a Bangladeshi fashion designer and brand owner, praised the decision. He said the brand recognized Bangladesh’s growing consumer base. He added that such launches improve the image of the local fashion scene.

Amin also noted that fashion has become global. Trends are now accessible through mobile phones and social media. According to him, the new outlet has already created strong interest among local fashion lovers. He said the designer’s personal style is unique and stands apart from others.

Before the Dhaka launch, many Bangladeshi customers bought these outfits from overseas markets. Popular buying destinations included Dubai, London, and the United States. Online preorders were also common.

Industry leaders see broader benefits. Maheen Khan, president of the Fashion Design Council of Bangladesh, called the launch a positive development. She said Dhaka is becoming a global city and needs a global retail environment.

The move is also seen as a signal of change in the apparel sector. Bangladesh’s industry is mostly known for fast-fashion production. Experts believe the entry of brands like Maria B could increase competition. It may also encourage more international labels to consider Bangladesh.

Model and fashion figure Azra Mahmood shared similar views. She said international brands usually avoid entering the Bangladeshi market. This includes not only fashion labels but also global food chains. From a business perspective, she called the launch a strong and positive sign.

Many believe this development could open doors for future global fashion investments.
