LAHORE: A man has accused police of torturing him after his wife and infant daughter died falling into an open manhole near Bhatti Gate in Lahore. He claims officers pressured him to confess to their deaths.
Speaking to a private TV channel, Ghulam Murtaza said he went to the police station to report the tragic accident. Instead, he alleged, he was taken into custody and physically abused by SHO Zain. He said the officer accused him of lying about the incident.
Murtaza clarified that there was no dispute between him and his wife. He said the family had gone out for a walk when the tragedy occurred. He claimed he repeatedly told police that he had witnessed his wife and daughter fall into the sewer, but officers refused to believe him.
He also alleged that police confiscated his mobile phone during detention. At the time of the incident, one of his sons was with his wife, he said. Murtaza added that police pressured him to admit to killing his wife and child, despite his insistence that it was an accident.
His cousin, Tanveer, was also reportedly detained alongside him. Murtaza accused police of attempting to force confessions from both men.
