Record Number of Pakistani Doctors Leave Country in 2025

In 2025, Pakistan witnessed a historic exodus of medical professionals, with nearly 4,000 doctors leaving the country for better opportunities overseas. The trend represents the highest outflow of healthcare workers in the nation’s history.

A report by Gallup Pakistan, based on data from the Bureau of Immigration, revealed that between 3,800 and 4,000 doctors departed last year. For the past three decades, only a few hundred doctors left annually, but the number has surged significantly since 2010.

Experts attribute this growing trend to several factors. Poor working conditions, limited career growth, and security concerns were cited as major reasons for the mass departures. Many medical professionals also sought a higher standard of living and better facilities abroad.

The global demand for skilled healthcare workers has made it easier for Pakistani doctors to find lucrative opportunities in other countries. Nations in Europe, North America, and the Middle East have been particularly attractive due to competitive salaries and advanced medical infrastructure.

Healthcare analysts warn that this brain drain could impact Pakistan’s medical sector, potentially leading to shortages in hospitals and clinics across the country. They emphasize the need for government policies that improve working conditions, provide incentives, and ensure the safety of healthcare professionals.

The Gallup report suggests that without intervention, the number of doctors leaving Pakistan may continue to rise, further affecting the nation’s healthcare delivery system. Strengthening domestic medical institutions and offering career development opportunities could help retain talent and reduce the outflow.
