UK Mobile Internet Speeds Fall Behind Several Countries Despite Wide 4G Coverage

Britain’s Mobile Internet performance has fallen behind several countries, including Kazakhstan, Cambodia, and Romania, according to recent reports. Despite having widespread 4G coverage, many users continue to experience slow speeds, weak signals, and unreliable connections.

According to The Telegraph, mobile users in the UK frequently face delayed app loading, interrupted browsing, and poor connection quality. These problems continue even as network providers work to expand and improve their infrastructure.

A separate analysis by consumer group Which? found that the UK performed worse than every European Union and G7 country in terms of Mobile Internet coverage and network quality.

The report ranked Britain 57th globally for overall mobile network performance. It also placed the country 70th for mobile download speeds and 55th for connection consistency.

These issues affect everyday activities such as video calls, online gaming, streaming services, and digital payments. More than one-third of mobile users also reported experiencing network problems during the past year.

According to Ofcom, at least one mobile operator provides predicted 4G coverage across 96 percent of the UK’s land area. However, this does not mean every customer receives a stable or reliable signal.

Only 84 percent of the country has predicted good 4G coverage from all mobile network operators. Meanwhile, combined 5G coverage from every operator currently reaches only 64 percent of the UK.

Experts say coverage maps do not fully reflect real-world performance. Network congestion, indoor signal strength, and heavy traffic during busy hours can all reduce service quality.

As a result, many users see a 4G or 5G icon on their phones while websites, videos, or mobile applications fail to load properly.

A YouGov survey also highlighted the challenges faced by travellers. More than four out of ten people said they struggled to access reliable 4G or 5G service for at least half the time while travelling.

Around 45 percent of users experienced Mobile Internet connectivity issues outside their homes at least once every week. Among people aged 18 to 24, the figure increased to 57 percent.

Britain’s global ranking has also continued to decline over recent years. The country dropped from 51st place in 2023 to 53rd in 2024 and later to 59th before the latest rankings.

Industry experts say planning delays are slowing network expansion. Mobile operators need additional towers and upgraded equipment to improve service quality and network capacity.

However, planning objections and disputes with landowners often delay the construction of new infrastructure. Large cities also experience network congestion because many users connect to the same towers at the same time.

Rural areas face different challenges. Building new infrastructure in these regions is more expensive, while serving fewer customers reduces commercial incentives for investment.

Mobile coverage on Britain’s railway network also remains below expectations. Some countries, including Germany, have introduced minimum mobile download speed requirements along major railway routes.

Although the UK offers relatively affordable mobile plans, experts believe lower prices alone cannot compensate for inconsistent performance. Improving Mobile Internet quality will require continued investment, faster infrastructure development, and better network coverage across both urban and rural areas.
