The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to acquire land for a new dam in Islamabad’s Shahdara area. The project aims to provide 10 million gallons of water daily to residents.
CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa presided over a meeting and directed officials to begin preparations for the early launch of the new dam project. Officers confirmed that WAPDA has completed a feasibility study, which includes land acquisition, water conveyance, and a treatment plant.
The proposed dam will cover 25 acres, and design work is set to begin soon. The PC-1 proposal will later be submitted to the CDA’s Development Working Party for final approval. Randhawa also instructed Suparco to conduct a survey before land acquisition starts, ensuring all legal requirements are followed.
“The feasibility report and detailed design should be submitted to the committee handling water issues in the twin cities for review,” he said. The project is expected to improve water supply and help manage Islamabad’s growing demand.
The CDA’s decision comes as the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) revises property valuation rates across Islamabad. Traders had requested the review, which resulted in a 30 to 50 percent reduction in rates for 68 locations in the capital.
For example, in Sector B-17, plots with possession are now valued at Rs30,000 per square yard, down from Rs50,000. Non-possession plots have dropped from Rs40,000 to Rs15,000 per square yard. In high-value sectors like E-7, F-6, and F-7, rates were also reduced substantially.
Officials said the revised rates would encourage property transactions and provide relief to the real estate sector. The combined efforts of land acquisition for the new dam and revised valuations are expected to benefit both water infrastructure and the housing market in Islamabad.
The Shahdara new dam is a key step in improving water supply in the capital and reflects the government’s focus on sustainable urban development.
