China Develops Microwave Weapon Capable of Targeting Satellites in Space

China has developed a new Microwave Weapon system that could reshape the global space security landscape. Researchers linked to the Chinese military say the technology is smaller, more powerful, and harder to detect than previous systems.

According to a recent study, scientists at the Northwest Institute of Nuclear Technology created a new driver called TPG1000Cs. This device is designed for use in a high‑power Microwave Weapon that can disrupt satellite electronics. Experts say such systems could potentially target low‑Earth‑orbit satellite networks.

The new driver is about four meters long and weighs five tons. Researchers claim it is smaller than similar systems developed in other countries. The compact size makes the Microwave Weapon easier to deploy and conceal.

The study reported that the system operated continuously for one minute during tests. It produced around 200,000 pulses with stable performance. Earlier systems could only operate for a few seconds, making this a major improvement.

Scientists said a ground‑based microwave system needs only one gigawatt of power to disrupt satellite networks in low‑Earth orbit. However, the new Chinese system reportedly generated electric pulses reaching up to 20 gigawatts. This suggests a significant increase in potential capability.

High‑power microwave technology has been a focus for major powers such as China, the United States, and Russia. Unlike traditional anti‑satellite weapons, a Microwave Weapon can disable electronics without destroying the satellite itself. This reduces the risk of creating large amounts of space debris.

Analysts say this approach could make space conflicts less visible but more complex. Disabling satellites without explosions makes it harder to detect or attribute attacks.

The reported development highlights the growing competition in space technology. Governments are investing heavily in systems that can protect or disrupt satellite networks. As reliance on satellites increases, technologies like the Microwave Weapon may play a larger role in future defense strategies.
