Pakistan Business Forum Urges Government to Control Milk Prices

Lahore: The Pakistan Business Forum (PBF) on Monday called on the government to regulate dairy companies and stabilize milk prices.

In a statement, the PBF said milk is a daily necessity, but there are no proper checks on its rising cost. The forum warned that high milk prices are affecting ordinary consumers.

PBF chief organizer Ahmed Jawad highlighted that retail milk is being sold at Rs 360 to 380 per litre. โ€œEven after removing GST, milk prices remain at Rs 305 to 315 per litre,โ€ he said.

Officials added that the actual purchase cost of milk, including logistics, is around Rs 180 per litre. They also compared prices in neighboring countries, noting that Tetra Pak milk in India and Bangladesh costs between Rs 250 to 270 per litre.

The business forum expressed concern that the dairy companiesโ€™ income ranges from Rs 60 billion to 100 billion, making milk less affordable for the general public.

The PBF urged the government to immediately intervene to reduce milk prices by Rs 50 per litre. They also recommended limiting GST on dairy products to seven percent to make milk accessible for all citizens.

Ahmed Jawad emphasized that milk is a basic necessity and should not be out of reach for ordinary families. The forum warned that without regulation, price hikes could continue, putting further strain on households across the country.
