WhatsApp has started rolling out support for voice and video calls on its web app. Users can now make calls on web directly from their browsers without installing any additional software.
Previously, WhatsApp Web was limited to messaging only. With this update, the platform is expanding its capabilities, allowing one-to-one conversations to include calls on web. WABetaInfo reported that the feature is currently in beta and under development.
The calls on web appear through dedicated โVoiceโ and โVideoโ buttons in individual chats. Users can initiate voice and video calls directly from these options. WhatsApp is focusing on providing a stable and smooth experience before the full rollout.
In addition, the calls on web will support screen sharing, making it useful for presentations and collaborative work. The feature will also retain end-to-end encryption, ensuring user privacy during voice and video communication. Notably, this update will also benefit platforms like Linux, which do not have an official WhatsApp desktop app.
While a full rollout timeline is not confirmed, the addition of calls on web is expected to enhance WhatsApp Webโs functionality for desktop users significantly. Metaโs gradual updates, including the addition of Meta AI shortcuts, suggest a strategy focused on improving the user experience rather than just visibility.
Currently, calls on web are limited to one-on-one chats, with group call support expected in future updates. Beta testers can try the new feature by accessing the latest WhatsApp Web build and clicking the new Voice or Video buttons in active chats.
This development brings WhatsApp Web closer to the full functionality of its mobile apps, making desktop communication seamless for millions of users worldwide.
