Actor Rajpal Yadav has surrendered to authorities and begun serving a six-month sentence at Tihar Jail. The Delhi High Court had directed him to appear by February 4 after repeated delays in compliance.
The court, led by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, rejected last-minute pleas for extensions, noting that leniency cannot continue indefinitely. When Yadav failed to surrender on time, his counsel sought extra time, citing travel and fund arrangements. The court recorded “strong disapproval” and insisted on judicial discipline.
On February 5, Rajpal Yadav submitted fresh demand drafts totaling Rs 25 lakh and proposed a new payment schedule. Despite this, the court declined to recall the surrender order, emphasizing that legal processes must be followed strictly. Later that day, Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail, where authorities confirmed that standard procedures were observed.
The case dates back to April 2018, when a magistrate’s court convicted Rajpal Yadav and his wife in multiple cheque bounce cases, sentencing him to six months in prison. A sessions court upheld the conviction in 2019, and the matter eventually reached the Delhi High Court.
The actor was required to repay Rs 1.35 crore in seven separate cases. While he made partial payments and received several extensions, nearly Rs 9 crore remained outstanding. The High Court had temporarily suspended his conviction in June 2024, expecting “sincere and genuine measures” toward settlement, but these efforts did not materialize.
Before surrendering, Yadav spoke publicly about his financial struggles. In interviews, he admitted he had limited support and no alternative to repayment. He expressed feelings of isolation, saying, “There are no friends. I have to deal with this crisis on my own.”
The dispute originated in 2010 when Rajpal Yadav borrowed around Rs 5 crore for his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. Due to limited returns and mounting liabilities, repayment became difficult, leading to dishonoured cheques and criminal proceedings under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
This development marks the end of a prolonged legal saga for Rajpal Yadav, highlighting the strict enforcement of financial and judicial regulations in India.
