Polling has started across Bangladesh for the first general elections since the 2024 public uprising. Voting began early on February 12 under strict security arrangements. Authorities say more than 127 million citizens are eligible to vote.
These first general elections are seen as a major test for the country’s democratic system. Thousands of polling stations have been set up nationwide. Security forces have been deployed to maintain order. Voting will continue throughout Thursday. Official results are expected on Friday.
The elections come after former prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned in 2024. Her resignation followed weeks of mass protests. She later left the country and went into exile in India. Her political party has been barred from taking part in these polls.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is one of the main contenders. Its leader, Tarique Rahman, is considered a strong candidate for prime minister. Rahman returned to Bangladesh in December after 17 years abroad. He has promised to strengthen democratic institutions and improve the economy. He has also pledged to restore public trust in governance.
An 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami is also contesting. The party had faced restrictions during Hasina’s rule. However, it has gained support after recent political changes. Some women and minority groups have raised concerns about its possible success.
The first general elections are being conducted under an interim government. The government is led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Officials say they are committed to holding free and fair elections. Nearly 500 international observers are monitoring the process. These include representatives from the European Union and the Commonwealth.
Bangladesh’s parliament has 350 seats. Of these, 300 are directly elected. The remaining 50 seats are reserved for women. Around five million young voters are participating for the first time.
Alongside the vote, a referendum on political reforms is also underway. Proposed reforms include limits on the Prime Minister’s term. Other measures aim to improve the balance of power.
Political analysts believe these first general elections could shape Bangladesh’s future direction. The outcome may influence stability and governance in the coming years.
