Journalist’s Arrest After Maryam Nawaz’s Slip of Tongue Sparks Debate Over Media Freedom in Punjab

A minor slip of tongue by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during a rally in Mianwali has sparked major controversy on social media, leading to the arrest of a journalist.

During her Thursday speech, CM Maryam Nawaz said: “Maryam Nawaz does not just make claims like Nawaz Sharif, but she delivered results.” Critics quickly cropped the clip and circulated it online.

Journalist Khurram Iqbal, who shared the clip, alleges he was forcibly taken from his sister’s Lahore home on Friday afternoon by unidentified individuals in plain clothes. Khurram said he was held for nearly eight hours and taken to multiple locations, including CCD office, Iqbal Town police station, and FIA office.

He stated that he was accused of creating and spreading a “fake video” under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). Khurram emphasized that the original clip is still available on the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s official social media accounts and TV channels.

During his ordeal, the journalist denied editing the video and claimed he only shared it. “If I made a mistake, I apologized. I didn’t think such a minor slip of tongue would lead to such extreme action against me,” Khurram said.

Public Outrage and Political Backlash

The arrest has sparked outrage among media professionals. Many journalists condemned the Punjab government for allegedly “making a journalist disappear.” Some demanded the removal of Information Minister Azma Bukhari and a formal apology to Khurram.

Azma Bukhari defended the action, claiming Khurram was allegedly spreading propaganda and was part of a “propaganda cell.” She shared both the original and edited clips to justify her stance.

The incident highlights increasing tensions between Pakistan’s ruling establishment and the press. Critics argue that using PECA against a journalist over minor verbal slips undermines freedom of expression and democratic norms.

Observers note that such arrests may intimidate media professionals, creating fear among journalists reporting on political leaders. The case continues to draw attention from media watchdogs and civil society groups calling for accountability and protection for journalists.

The controversy underscores the delicate balance between law enforcement and media freedom in Pakistan, especially in politically sensitive matters.
