Bangladesh’s newly elected prime minister and the cabinet will take the oath on February 17. The ceremony will be held in Dhaka after the recent general elections.
The Chief Election Commissioner will administer the oath to the prime minister and the new cabinet members. The event is expected to mark the formal start of the new government’s term.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a strong victory in the elections. The party is led by Tarique Rahman, a key figure from one of the country’s most influential political families.
The election results were celebrated by BNP supporters across the country. The victory came after a closely watched national vote in the South Asian nation of about 170 million people.
Interim government leader Muhammad Yunus has invited several regional and global leaders to attend the oath ceremony. Invitations were sent to the prime ministers of Pakistan and India.
Leaders from China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives, and Bhutan have also been invited to the event.
Meanwhile, political consultations are expected ahead of the new government’s formation. Reports say Tarique Rahman will visit the residence of Shafiqur Rahman, the head of Jamaat-e-Islami, who is likely to lead the opposition.
He is also expected to meet Naheed Islam, a leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and an ally of Jamaat-e-Islami.
The NCP was formed by student leaders who led protests against the government of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
