As Ramadan 2026 approaches, many Muslims are asking how to distribute Zakat. Should it be given to one person or shared among many?
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. Adult and mentally sound Muslims must donate 2.5% of eligible wealth annually. This includes cash, gold, silver, and investments, provided the total reaches the nisab (minimum required amount).
Islamic guidelines allow donors to give Zakat either to one eligible recipient or to multiple individuals. Both methods are valid, depending on the needs of recipients.
However, giving an excessive amount to a single person is considered undesirable (makruh) if it makes them financially self-sufficient. Even so, the Zakat remains valid when given in one lump sum.
The choice between giving to one person or many depends on individual circumstances. For example, a person with higher family expenses, debt, or urgent financial needs may benefit more from receiving the full Zakat amount.
If the Zakat amount is larger than a single person’s needs, it is better to distribute it among multiple recipients. This way, several people can benefit, fulfilling the spirit of Zakat in helping more needy individuals.
In Pakistan, the government has fixed the Nisab for Zakat deduction on bank accounts at Rs. 503,529 for 2026. Those holding balances equal to or above this amount in savings, profit and loss-sharing accounts, or similar deposits on the first day of Ramadan will have Zakat deducted automatically.
Experts advise Muslims to plan Zakat carefully. They should consider the financial needs of recipients, family circumstances, and the total Zakat amount available. Giving Zakat correctly ensures it reaches deserving individuals and fulfills religious obligations.
Whether giving to one person or distributing among many, Zakat remains a vital act of charity. It helps reduce poverty, supports families in need, and strengthens community bonds during the holy month of Ramadan.
This Ramadan, Muslims are encouraged to give Zakat responsibly, ensuring it benefits the maximum number of deserving people while complying with Islamic guidelines and government regulations.
