KARACHI: The central runway at Karachi airport has been fully upgraded and is now capable of handling the world’s largest planes, including the Airbus A380. The renovation aims to improve the airport’s operational efficiency and international capacity.
Runway 07L/25R, also called the central runway, was upgraded within an 18-month timeframe. Following this enhancement, the runway classification has been updated, making it suitable for wide-body aircraft and long-haul international flights. Airport officials say this will allow Karachi airport to accommodate more international airlines and larger aircraft safely.
The upgrade is expected to boost passenger convenience and airport efficiency. Modern equipment and strengthened runway surfaces ensure safer landings and takeoffs. Airlines operating larger aircraft will now find Karachi airport more accessible for global routes.
In addition to operational improvements, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) collects airport charges from departing passengers. Domestic travelers pay PKR 600, while international travelers are charged PKR 4,600. These funds are reinvested in airport infrastructure, terminal expansion, and passenger services.
Landing fees are calculated based on the aircraft’s maximum takeoff weight (MTOW). Parking charges apply per ton, per hour, with the first two hours free for all domestic and international flights. There are no separate takeoff or double-charge provisions.
The revenue generated from these charges supports modernization efforts, including terminal improvements, better facilities, and upgraded equipment. PAA emphasizes that these investments aim to provide a safe, comfortable, and seamless experience for passengers.
Airport authorities believe that the upgraded runway will also strengthen Karachi airport’s position as a major hub for international travel in the region. Experts note that the enhanced infrastructure can attract more airlines and increase flight frequency, benefiting both travelers and the aviation industry.
