ISLAMABAD โ The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has reported a significant rise in illegal access to personal data and WhatsApp hacking across Pakistan. Officials said the increase highlights growing cyber threats targeting citizens.
According to the NCCIA, the agency received 1,57,465 complaints in the past year. Among these, 2,974 cases were related specifically to WhatsApp hacking and misuse. Cybercrime investigators conducted 1,032 inquiries, and at least one suspect was arrested.
The NCCIA disclosed that around 35 websites and 52 social media platforms were involved in misusing citizensโ personal data. The agency warned that cybercriminals use multiple tactics to access sensitive information.
One common method is sending fake WhatsApp verification codes via phone calls or messages to trick users. Another approach is obtaining duplicate SIM cards to gain control of a victimโs WhatsApp account. Cybercriminals also lure victims with job or prize offers to install remote-access software on their phones.
Once hackers gain access, they often demand money from victims or carry out financial fraud using stolen data. The agency emphasized that these attacks can cause severe financial and personal losses.
Officials urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid sharing verification codes or installing unknown applications on their phones. The NCCIA continues to investigate such cases and encourages the public to report any suspicious activity immediately.
