Lahore Basant Tragedy: 17 Lives Lost, LHC Informed

The Punjab Home Department informed the Lahore High Court (LHC) that at least 17 people died during the three-day Basant festival in Lahore from February 6 to 8. Officials submitted a detailed report highlighting fatalities caused by electrocution and falls from rooftops and trees.

Petitioners in the LHC questioned the report, saying it lacked details on injuries caused by kite strings. They argued that dozens of children were hurt while falling from roofs, raising concerns over public safety. The court was also asked to investigate expenditures and damages incurred during the festival.

During proceedings, the petitionerโ€™s counsel cited Basant claims of life-threatening hazards, stating that the festival posed significant risks to citizens, especially children. They requested the court to consider criminal and departmental action against officials for alleged negligence.

The petition also proposed forming a judicial commission to investigate losses and safety lapses during the celebrations. Authorities were asked to provide complete details of government spending related to Basant.

Earlier, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz praised the arrangements and security measures during the festival. She acknowledged citizen cooperation and emphasized that restrictions on kite flying would continue after the event. Officials were instructed to strictly enforce safety protocols.

People in Lahore celebrated Basant 2026 under strict SOPs, marking the first official festival in 25 years. The provincial government had organized the three-day event from February 6 to 8 under the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying Act 2025.

Experts noted that while the festival aimed to revive cultural traditions, Basant claims of hazards cannot be ignored. The eventโ€™s fatalities and injuries have prompted authorities to review safety measures and regulatory compliance.

In response to the court proceedings, officials stated that lessons from the 2026 Basant would inform future policy. The government aims to balance cultural celebration with public safety. Authorities stressed the need to continue monitoring and enforcing regulations to prevent accidents.

Overall, the three-day festival showcased Lahoreโ€™s vibrant culture, but the reported deaths and injuries have intensified discussions on Basant claims of risk and safety management.
