FIFA May Delay France vs Paraguay as 100°F Creates Unsafe Conditions for Players, Fans

An intense heatwave across the eastern and central United States is creating fresh challenges for FIFA during the 2026 World Cup. Weather experts have warned that soaring temperatures could affect upcoming knockout matches and raise health concerns for players, officials, and spectators.

According to weather forecasts, the Round of 16 match between France and Paraguay on July 5 could become the hottest game of the tournament. Temperatures are expected to rise above 100°F (37.8°C), while the heat index may reach 110°F to 115°F (43.3°C to 46.1°C).

The expected weather conditions could increase the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration. Thousands of fans are also expected to attend the match at an open-air stadium, where prolonged exposure to high temperatures may create additional safety concerns.

Current FIFA guidelines allow a match to be postponed only if the wet bulb globe temperature reaches 89.6°F (32°C). This measurement considers temperature, humidity, wind, and cloud cover to assess the overall heat stress on the human body.

Despite the extreme forecast, the expected conditions for the France versus Paraguay match may still remain below the threshold required for postponement. As a result, officials are expected to rely on existing heat management measures during the game.

The impact of the heat has already been seen earlier in the tournament. French players reportedly used sprinklers on the pitch during their match against Sweden, where temperatures reached around 90°F. The cooling measures helped players cope with the demanding weather conditions.

Under existing tournament protocols, both teams receive mandatory cooling breaks during matches played in extreme heat. These breaks are designed to allow players to hydrate and recover before continuing play. However, some experts believe additional cooling time may be necessary if temperatures continue to rise.

The heatwave is also a concern for supporters attending the matches. Fans spending several hours outdoors face an increased risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses. The risk may be even greater for those consuming alcoholic beverages while sitting in direct sunlight.

To improve safety, host cities and stadium operators plan to provide shaded areas and cooling zones for spectators. These facilities will also be available at FIFA Fan Festivals, where large crowds are expected throughout the tournament.

Health officials continue to advise fans to drink plenty of water, avoid unnecessary sun exposure, and follow local weather advisories while attending World Cup events.

As the tournament progresses, FIFA will continue monitoring weather conditions across host cities. Organizers are expected to review forecasts regularly and implement additional safety measures if extreme temperatures persist during the remainder of the competition.
