KARACHI: Clashes erupted on Sunday in Karachi after the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a joint US-Israeli air strike. The incident led to injuries and heightened tensions in the city.
Shia organisations had announced a march toward the US Consulate to protest Khamenei killed. Crowds gathered at Abbas Town and Numaish Chowrangi, moving toward the consulate despite heavy police presence.
Police used tear gas to disperse protesters, who responded by throwing stones. Several people were injured and shifted to Civil Hospital, according to Edhi Information. Traffic routes near Numaish Chowrangi were closed, and alternative routes were provided.
Protesters also set a traffic police post on fire in Sultanabad, expressing anger over the Khamenei killed news. Authorities maintained a large security contingent along MT Khan Road to prevent escalation.
The US and Israel confirmed the air strike that killed Khamenei. The 86-year-old Iranian leader was targeted in what officials called the most ambitious attacks on Iran in decades. Iranian state media also reported his death on Saturday.
US President Donald Trump said the strikes aimed to neutralize a long-standing threat from Iran and prevent it from developing nuclear weapons. He described the attacks as necessary to ensure regional security.
Iran responded by launching hundreds of missiles and drones targeting US forces in the region, as well as cities in Israel and allied Arab countries. The retaliation caused widespread flight cancellations and raised concerns of further escalation.
The killing of Khamenei has intensified protests not only in Karachi but across several countries. Authorities continue to monitor crowds closely as tensions remain high.
The situation highlights the fragile security environment in Pakistan following significant geopolitical events. Citizens and motorists are advised to stay alert and avoid protest routes.
