Dr. Tahirul Qadri, founder of Minhaj-ul-Quran, has announced the postponement of the 2026 Shehr e Itikaf event due to security concerns.
For over 35 years, the Shehr e Itikaf event has been held annually, drawing thousands of participants from Pakistan and abroad. It is recognized as one of the largest spiritual gatherings after Makkah and Madinah.
Dr. Qadri cited the current political climate and international situation as the main reasons for postponing the event. He urged followers to observe prayers and Itikaf in their local mosques or homes instead of traveling to a central venue.
“This year, large gatherings may not be safe. Devotees should perform Itikaf in their own cities and villages,” Qadri said.
The founder highlighted that the Shehr e Itikaf event has always aimed to provide a peaceful and spiritual environment for worshippers. He emphasized that safety and security must take priority, given the present circumstances.
The Shehr e Itikaf event was first launched in Lahore in 1991 and has grown steadily since then. Over the years, it has become a significant religious and spiritual occasion for Muslims observing the last ten days of Ramadan.
Authorities and organizers of Minhaj-ul-Quran are expected to announce a revised schedule for the Shehr e Itikaf event once the security situation improves. Meanwhile, participants are encouraged to continue spiritual practices in their homes.
The decision to postpone the 2026 Shehr e Itikaf event has been met with understanding from followers, who praised the emphasis on safety while maintaining religious observance. Dr. Qadri reiterated his commitment to resuming the event when conditions allow, ensuring the traditional spiritual atmosphere is preserved.
This year’s postponement marks the first time in decades that the Shehr e Itikaf event will not take place at the central Lahore venue. Devotees are encouraged to stay connected with official Minhaj-ul-Quran channels for future updates.
The Shehr e Itikaf event remains an important part of Minhaj-ul-Quran’s spiritual programs, continuing to inspire devotion, prayer, and community engagement among participants.
