BAKU – Azerbaijan reported that two civilians were injured after Iranian drone strikes targeted Nakhichevan Airport and a nearby school on Thursday. The attacks involved at least two Iran drones crossing from Iran into Azerbaijan’s exclave of Nakhichevan.
“One drone hit the terminal of Nakhichevan Airport, while another struck near a school in Shekerabad village,” the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry said. The airport sustained property damage, and the strikes injured two people.
Azerbaijan’s Defence Ministry stated that the country is preparing retaliatory measures. Officials emphasized that the attacks will not go unanswered and vowed to protect the country’s sovereignty and civilian safety.
The foreign ministry summoned the Iranian envoy in Baku to issue a strong protest. Authorities said the Iran drone strikes violated international law and increased regional tensions. They added that Azerbaijan reserves the right to respond appropriately.
Analysts noted that Iran has long been concerned about Israeli activities in Azerbaijan. Israel, a close ally of Azerbaijan, supplies advanced arms and has conducted operations against Iranian targets in the past. Iran feared Azerbaijani territory might be used for such attacks.
Last June, Azerbaijan assured Iran that its territory would not be used for strikes against Tehran following Israeli air raids on Iranian facilities. Despite these assurances, the recent Iran drone attacks indicate rising tensions in the region.
The Nakhichevan exclave, separated from mainland Azerbaijan by Armenia, is a strategically sensitive area. The use of Iran drones highlights the risks of cross-border incidents and potential escalation.
Officials in Baku are closely monitoring the situation. Emergency services responded to the site, while security forces heightened alerts near civilian infrastructure.
Regional experts warn that repeated Iran drone activity could complicate relations between Azerbaijan and its neighbors. Both nations face pressure to manage tensions without triggering a broader conflict.
