The University of Karachi (KU) announced on Saturday that all morning classes will be held as online classes starting Monday, March 9, 2026. The decision will remain in effect until the end of Ramadan al-Mubarak.
Registrar Prof. Dr. Imran Ahmad Siddiqui issued the notification, stating that the shift aims to provide convenience for students during the last ten days of Ramadan, known as the third Ashra. The change is also designed to help students cope with transportation challenges caused by the recent rise in petrol prices.
The decision was approved by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi. Authorities emphasized that the move to online classes ensures that students can continue their education without disruption, even amid fuel shortages or high transport costs.
The government of Pakistan recently announced a sharp increase in petrol prices due to rising global oil costs linked to tensions in the Middle East. Petrol prices have increased by Rs. 55 per litre, bringing the new rate to Rs. 321.17 per litre. Diesel prices rose from Rs. 275.70 to Rs. 335.86 per litre.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar explained that the increase was necessary after escalating regional conflicts, including the recent attack on Iran. The involvement of Turkey and Azerbaijan in the situation has further pushed global oil prices higher.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik described the hike as a difficult but necessary step, ensuring that Pakistanโs energy requirements continue to be met.
University officials encouraged students to prepare for online classes by checking their schedules and accessing study materials digitally. They assured that teaching standards and academic activities will continue without compromise despite the shift to virtual learning.
Experts say that the move to online classes reflects a growing trend among educational institutions to use digital platforms during emergencies. It allows students to maintain continuity in their studies while reducing transportation challenges.
Students are advised to stay updated through the KU official portal for notifications regarding class schedules and online access. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and will make further adjustments if required.
This shift highlights the universityโs proactive approach to balancing academic needs with student convenience in challenging times.
