Punjab government has announced a major transport initiative to improve student mobility across the province. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the reintroduction of the E-Bikes scheme, allowing students to receive electric bikes through easy and interest-free installment plans.
The decision was made during a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by the chief minister. The initiative aims to make affordable transportation available to students while promoting cleaner and environmentally friendly travel.
Under the new scheme, the Punjab government plans to distribute 100,000 E-Bikes within one year. To make the program affordable, the government will provide a subsidy of Rs70,000 for each electric bike.
Male students will be required to pay a down payment of Rs14,000 to receive an electric bike. After that, they will pay a monthly interest-free installment of Rs2,100 until the cost is cleared.
Female students will receive additional support under the scheme. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced that she will personally cover the down payment and registration fee for female applicants. They will also pay only the monthly interest-free installment of Rs2,100.
The E-Bikes program will not be limited to students. Government employees in Punjab will also be eligible to obtain electric bikes through easy installment plans, helping more people switch to affordable and eco-friendly transportation.
During the meeting, officials also informed the chief minister that Punjab has reached another milestone in public transport. An electric bus assembling plant has started operations in the province. This means Punjab is now not only operating electric buses but also assembling them locally.
The government also approved plans to expand electric bus services across Punjab. In the first phase, 1,500 buses will begin operating in 91 tehsils. These areas fall within the divisions of Gujranwala, Gujrat, Rawalpindi, Multan, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Faisalabad, and Sargodha.
Officials said PC-1 approval has already been granted for another 1,500 electric buses at the tehsil level. In addition, 189 newly assembled electric buses are ready for soft launching in different districts.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to immediately start electric bus services in Kot Addu, Talagang, and Taunsa Sharif. She also ordered the launch of bus services in Vehari and Lodhran.
The chief minister further instructed officials to increase the number of electric buses in Vehari, Lodhran, and Nankana Sahib. She emphasized that every area should have at least 15 buses, especially those currently operating with fewer vehicles.

The Punjab government believes these projects will improve public transportation, reduce travel costs, and encourage the use of clean energy. Along with the E-Bikes scheme, the expansion of electric bus services reflects the province’s broader plan to modernize transport and provide affordable travel options for students, employees, and the general public.
