Authorities in the United Arab Emirates have arrested ten people for sharing videos, including AI-generated videos, that allegedly misled the public during recent regional tensions. The crackdown targeted content showing dramatic scenes of air defence systems intercepting projectiles, explosions, and attacks on landmarks.
Officials confirmed that those arrested include nationals from Pakistan, Egypt, Philippines, Vietnam, Iran, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Nepal, and India. Some videos were genuine, while others were AI-generated videos designed to exaggerate events, causing unnecessary panic and fear among viewers.
The UAE Public Prosecution has ordered the suspects to remain in custody while investigations continue. Authorities warned that sharing real or AI-generated videos of security incidents could threaten public safety, expose defence operations, and aid hostile media outlets in spreading misinformation.
Under UAE law, spreading content that endangers national security or public order carries strict penalties, including at least one year in prison and fines starting at 100,000 dirhams. The arrests highlight the countryโs zero-tolerance approach to misinformation, emphasizing that even videos circulated privately on WhatsApp or social media can be treated as serious violations.
Investigators noted that some posts contained authentic footage of air defence systems intercepting projectiles. However, other posts included AI-generated videos depicting explosions, fires, and attacks on landmarks. Certain clips were further manipulated to evoke emotional responses, including scenes of children, falsely suggesting an imminent threat to public safety.
The move was ordered by UAE Attorney-General Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi, who stressed the need for urgent trials to prevent further circulation of misleading content. Authorities continue to monitor online platforms closely, warning residents and visitors to avoid filming or sharing security-related incidents.
The crackdown demonstrates UAEโs commitment to protecting public safety and ensuring accurate reporting during times of heightened security. Officials urge the public to report suspicious content rather than share it, especially if AI-generated videos may distort reality.
