TEHRAN/TEL AVIV – Iran launched missile strikes on Tel Aviv following the assassination of a senior security official. The attack marks a sharp escalation in regional tensions.
According to reports, the strikes were carried out overnight on Tuesday. Israeli authorities stated that some missiles used by Iran carried cluster-type warheads. These weapons release smaller explosives over a wide area.
Officials said the missiles hit densely populated areas of Tel Aviv. At least two people were killed in the attack. The total death toll in Israel from the ongoing conflict has now reached 14.
The strikes came shortly after Iran confirmed the death of its senior official Ali Larijani. He was reportedly killed in what authorities described as a targeted assassination. His son, Morteza Larijani, and other officials also died in the incident.
Iranian officials blamed the attack on external forces. They called it a coordinated operation targeting key leadership figures. The country’s Revolutionary Guards condemned the killing and warned of consequences.
Meanwhile, Israeli media reported that the operation took place at a secret location. It suggested a possible intelligence breach at a high level. Israeli leadership has not officially confirmed details of the assassination.
In response to rising tensions, Israel claimed it carried out strikes in Tehran. Reports indicate that more than 10 locations were targeted. These sites were linked to Basij positions, according to Israeli officials.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said operations would continue. He stated that Israel would keep targeting Iran’s leadership. This statement signals further escalation in the coming days.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also addressed the situation. He claimed that key figures had been eliminated in recent operations.
On the other hand, concerns have also emerged inside Iran. Officials reported that a projectile landed near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. However, no damage or injuries were reported.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has been informed. Its Director General Rafael Grossi urged all sides to show restraint. He warned that further escalation could risk nuclear safety.
