LPG prices in Pakistan have surged sharply, putting pressure on household consumers and rickshaw drivers. The sudden hike has raised concerns across major cities.
In Gujranwala, LPG is now selling between Rs420 and Rs460 per kilogram. Meanwhile, in Karachi, prices have climbed from Rs350 to Rs380 per kilogram, affecting both homes and small businesses.
Ali Haider, convener of the LPG committee, said the increase is not solely due to shopkeepers. Marketing companies and distributors are also raising rates, contributing to a Rs130 per kilogram jump in some areas.
Officials from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) stated that they have not received any official notice regarding the latest LPG price hikes. They emphasized that the authority monitors compliance with government-set rates and can take action if retailers overcharge consumers.
The OGRA spokesperson also noted that delays in the supply of 3.5 million kilograms of LPG from Port Qasim are beyond the regulatorโs jurisdiction. However, they stressed that provincial authorities should intervene if prices exceed approved limits.
Experts warn that rising LPG prices may increase the cost of living and transportation, as rickshaw drivers and small-scale businesses struggle with higher fuel expenses. Households dependent on LPG for cooking are also feeling the pinch, especially in urban areas with large demand.
The government has been urged to investigate the price surge and ensure timely delivery of LPG supplies. Observers believe that a coordinated effort between OGRA and provincial authorities is essential to stabilize LPG prices and prevent further financial strain on consumers.
The increase in LPG prices highlights ongoing challenges in Pakistanโs energy supply chain and the urgent need for regulatory oversight to protect consumers.
