The U.S. Treasury will issue redesigned notes to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. For the first time in 165 years, the signature of the U.S. treasurer will be removed from currency.
The first $100 bills will feature President Donald Trump’s signature alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s. Printing will begin in June, with other denominations following in subsequent months. Banks will take several weeks to circulate the new notes.
Current bills still carry the signatures of former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and former Treasurer Lynn Malerba. Malerba is the last treasurer whose signature has appeared on U.S. currency since 1861, when the government first issued federal notes.
Treasury officials said the change is part of efforts to celebrate the Semiquincentennial. Bessent stated that featuring Trump’s name on currency highlights strong U.S. economic growth and financial stability during his administration.
“This historic currency honors the achievements of our country and President Trump,” Bessent added. Treasury clarified that the overall design of bills remains unchanged, except for replacing the treasurer’s signature with Trump’s.
Efforts to produce a circulating $1 Trump coin were blocked due to laws prohibiting living individuals on U.S. coins. However, federal statutes allow the Treasury broad discretion to modify note designs to prevent counterfeiting while keeping key elements like “In God We Trust” and portraits of deceased figures.
Former treasurer Malerba declined to comment on the change. Jovita Carranza, who served under Trump’s first term, called it “a powerful symbol of American resilience and free enterprise.” Current Treasurer Brandon Beach also supported the move, praising Trump’s economic achievements.
The redesigned currency is expected to become a notable collectible and a symbol of U.S. history. Citizens and collectors alike are anticipated to closely watch the rollout of bills bearing the president’s signature.
