Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has laid the foundation stone for the reconstruction of Sehba Akhtar Road in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, officially launching a long-awaited infrastructure project aimed at improving traffic flow and road conditions in the area.
The project, estimated to cost Rs. 200 million, involves the rehabilitation of a 1.8-kilometre stretch of road that was originally constructed more than two decades ago. Over time, the road suffered significant damage due to heavy traffic usage, with conditions worsening recently because of ongoing development work along University Road.
The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has begun full reconstruction of the road, which will include major upgrades to the sewerage system. Officials said drainage problems had contributed to the roadโs deterioration, making infrastructure improvements necessary alongside surface reconstruction.
Speaking during the foundation ceremony, Wahab stated that the project was taken up on a priority basis due to persistent difficulties faced by commuters. He noted that Sehba Akhtar Road serves as an important link for residents traveling between key localities.
The route connects several busy areas, including Block 13-D, Gulshan Chowrangi, Hassan Square, and Sir Shah Suleman Road. Authorities believe that upgrading the road will significantly reduce congestion and improve daily commuting for thousands of residents.
Officials added that the reconstructed road will be widened to between 44 and 46 feet to accommodate rising traffic volumes. The mayor also highlighted that the project forms part of a broader plan to modernize Karachiโs infrastructure, with additional road development and rehabilitation projects under consideration across the city.
