Planet Labs Withholds Satellite Imagery Amid Escalating Iran War

WASHINGTON โ€“ Satellite imaging firm Planet Labs announced it will indefinitely withhold visuals of Iran and surrounding conflict areas. The move follows a U.S. government request aimed at preventing sensitive information from aiding adversaries.

The California-based company said the restriction applies to imagery dating back to March 9 and will continue until the Iran war ends. Previously, Planet Labs had imposed a 14-day delay on Middle East imagery to limit potential threats to U.S. and allied forces.

The Iran war began on February 28 when the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran. Tehran responded by targeting U.S. and Israeli positions in Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain. The conflict has intensified regional tensions and prompted concerns over military and civilian safety.

Satellite imagery plays a crucial role in modern warfare. Militaries use it for target identification, missile guidance, tracking, and secure communications. Experts warn that Iran could potentially access commercial satellite images through intermediaries or adversaries, making restrictions critical for operational security.

Planet Labs operates a large fleet of Earth-imaging satellites and provides frequent updates to governments, companies, and media. Under the new policy, the firm will use a โ€œmanaged distributionโ€ system, releasing images on a case-by-case basis for urgent, mission-critical needs or public interest purposes.

Other commercial providers, such as Vantor (formerly Maxar Technologies), said they have not been contacted by the U.S. government but maintain access controls during geopolitical conflicts. BlackSky Technology has yet to comment on any policy changes regarding the Iran war.

The U.S. Pentagon declined to comment on intelligence-related matters, emphasizing the sensitive nature of satellite imagery during active conflicts. Planet Labs described the situation as โ€œextraordinary circumstancesโ€ and stressed its effort to balance public and security interests.

With the Iran war continuing, satellite imagery restrictions highlight the growing challenges of monitoring conflict zones while maintaining operational safety for military and civilian personnel.
