Monkeypox Outbreak in Khairpur Claims Lives of Children, Emergency Measures Imposed

KHAIRPUR – The deputy commissioner of Khairpur has confirmed that four children have died due to monkeypox during a sudden outbreak of skin-related illnesses. A total of seven children lost their lives, while 19 others have been infected.

According to Commissioner Abid Saleem Qureshi, four fatalities were directly linked to monkeypox, while some affected children were also suffering from measles. Most deaths occurred in the Thariwah area of Khairpur. Emergency measures have been implemented to control the outbreak and prevent further infections.

Across the Sukkur Division, isolation wards have been established to treat patients and contain the spread of the disease. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation to provide timely medical support to affected children and families.

Monkeypox is a viral disease caused by the Mpox virus. Its natural reservoir is not fully known, but African rodents and non-human primates, such as monkeys, are suspected to carry the virus and transmit it to humans.

The disease usually begins with fever, followed by a rash that appears within 1 to 3 days. The rash starts on the face and spreads to other parts of the body, passing through stages including macules, papules, vesicles, pustules, and scabs. Patients may also experience headaches, muscle aches, exhaustion, and swollen lymph nodes.

The incubation period for monkeypox generally ranges from 7 to 14 days, but can vary between 5 and 21 days. The illness typically lasts between 2 and 4 weeks. Health officials emphasize early detection and isolation to prevent the disease from spreading further.
