The Lahore High Court on Monday took serious notice of issues linked to kite flying. The court was hearing petitions against the banned activity.
A single bench of the Lahore High Court, led by Justice Awais Khalid, reviewed the case. The petitions were filed by the Judicial Activism Panel, a group of lawyers.
During the hearing, the Lahore High Court asked authorities to submit complete records. These records must include cases registered against people who violated the kite flying ban.
The bench also raised questions about seized materials. It asked what happened to kites and twine taken by police. The court wanted to know if these items were destroyed or disposed of in another way.
The Lahore High Court further questioned the process used to control kite prices. It asked officials to explain how rates for kites and thread were monitored.
Another key concern was public safety. The court demanded full details of deaths and injuries linked to kite flying. It stressed the need for accurate data to understand the risks.
The court also directed authorities to take stronger steps. These measures should help prevent accidents related to kite flying in the future.
Earlier, the Punjab Home Department had submitted a report. The report revealed that at least 17 people died during the Basant festival in Lahore. The festival took place from February 6 to 8.
According to the report, many deaths were caused by electrocution. Others died after falling from rooftops or trees while flying kites.
However, the petitionerโs lawyer raised concerns about the report. He said it did not mention deaths caused by sharp kite strings. These strings are often considered highly dangerous.
The Lahore High Court noted these concerns during the hearing. It emphasized the importance of complete and transparent reporting.
The case also involves details about damages and expenses linked to the Basant festival. The court aims to review all aspects before making further decisions.
At the end of the session, the Lahore High Court adjourned the hearing. The next hearing is scheduled for April 23.
