UK Considers New Rules as Social Media Use Among Children Raises Concerns

The UK government is reviewing new measures to control Social media use among young people. The move comes as concerns grow about excessive screen time and online safety.

Keir Starmer said platforms like Instagram and TikTok must take responsibility. He urged companies to address features that keep users scrolling for long periods.

Speaking to BBC Radio, Starmer highlighted the risks of addictive content. He said endless scrolling on Social media can affect sleep, family life, and school performance.

The government is now considering several options. These include possible bans for children under 16, as well as time limits and curfews. Officials are testing how these steps may reduce excessive Social media use.

Starmer explained that many platforms use algorithms to keep users engaged. These systems are designed to increase screen time. He said such features are a major concern and may need to be restricted.

Parents across the UK have also raised concerns. Many believe their children spend too much time online. They have asked the government to take stronger action on Social media companies.

The UK is not alone in this approach. Countries like Australia have already introduced strict rules. Australia became the first nation to ban Social media for children under 16.

Other countries, including Greece and Indonesia, have also taken similar steps. These actions reflect a growing global concern about childrenโ€™s online habits.

The UK government has launched a public consultation on the issue. More than 45,000 responses have already been received. Officials said people can still share their views before the May 26 deadline.

Liz Kendall encouraged parents and teenagers to participate. She said their input is important in shaping future policies.

โ€œWe want to hear from families and young people,โ€ she said. โ€œTheir experiences will help guide our decisions.โ€

The government is also reviewing new technologies. This includes AI chatbots and features that may increase user engagement.

Officials say the goal is to create a safer digital environment. They want to ensure children can use Social media in a healthy and balanced way.

Further decisions are expected after the consultation process ends.
