LAHORE – A major step in railway development has been taken in Punjab with the launch of a new fast train project. The initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding between the Punjab government and Pakistan Railways.
The agreement was signed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Federal Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi. The project aims to modernize the railway system and improve travel across the province.
Under the plan, Pakistan’s first fast train will run between Lahore and Rawalpindi. The train will cover around 280 kilometers in just over two hours. This will significantly reduce travel time for passengers.
The fast train is expected to offer a modern and efficient travel experience. Officials say it will meet international standards. The service will benefit daily commuters and long-distance travelers.
Along with the fast train, a wider railway network will also be developed. The project includes a 1,415-kilometer rail system across 20 regions of Punjab. Eight local routes will be upgraded with modern trains.
The Punjab government will introduce new DMU trains on regional routes. These routes include Shahdara, Narowal, Sialkot, Raiwind, and Kasur. Other areas such as Pakpattan, Lodhran, and Faisalabad are also included.
New locomotives and coaches will be added under the project. Railway stations will be upgraded with better facilities. These include improved parking areas and modern safety systems.
Authorities will also focus on environmental improvements. More than 400,000 trees will be planted along railway tracks. Green parks will also be developed in selected areas.
Hanif Abbasi said the fast train project will benefit nearly 90 million people. He added that the system will provide travel facilities similar to European standards.
He also praised Maryam Nawaz Sharif for her leadership. He said the Chief Minister will personally supervise the project to ensure timely completion.
