The tragic incident in Lahoreโs Bhati Gate area near Data Darbar has once again come under public attention. The case, known as the sewer death case, involved the deaths of a mother and daughter who reportedly fell into an open manhole.
The sewer death case initially shocked residents due to concerns over civic negligence. However, new allegations have now shifted focus toward police handling of the matter. The aftermath has raised serious questions about investigation procedures.
The husband of the deceased woman, Ghulam Murtaza, has made serious accusations. He claimed that when he approached police to register a complaint in the sewer death case, he was pressured and allegedly tortured.
According to him, police officials questioned his version of events. They reportedly said that a body cannot pass through a manhole. He said this was used to challenge his statement.
Murtaza further alleged that he was taken to a separate room. There, he claims he was beaten with belts and sticks. He described this as custodial violence during his attempt to seek justice for the sewer death case.
Following these allegations, senior police officials took notice. The DIG Operations Lahore ordered action. SHO Bhati Gate Zain Abbas was suspended, and a show-cause notice was issued to a DSP.
However, the situation became more controversial later. Reports suggested that the same SHO, despite being under investigation, was later appointed as SHO Anarkali. This decision raised further concerns.
The investigation report also named several senior officers. These included DIG Imran Kishwar, AIG Imran Mahmood, DIG Nasir Virk, and a superintendent of police.
Officials had earlier stated that the inquiry report would be made public. However, no report has been released so far. This delay has increased public criticism surrounding the sewer death case.
Many citizens believe the case reflects both civic failure and administrative issues. The lack of transparency has fueled anger among the public.
The sewer death case continues to draw attention as questions remain unanswered. Families of the victims are still seeking justice, while authorities face pressure to clarify the situation.
The incident has now become a wider debate on accountability, police conduct, and urban safety in Lahore.
