Petrol Price May Cross Rs400 in Pakistan Amid IMF Pressure

Petrol Price May Cross Rs400 in Pakistan Amid IMF Pressure

ISLAMABAD โ€“ Pakistanis may face another increase in Petrol Price in May 2026 as the government moves forward with fiscal reforms linked to its agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

Officials from the Ministry of Finance Pakistan said petroleum levy collections are already on track to cross the yearly target of Rs1,468 billion. However, discussions are ongoing to increase the levy even further.

This possible move could raise the Petrol Price again in the coming weeks. It follows a recent increase of nearly Rs27 per litre. That increase pushed the petroleum levy on petrol to more than Rs107 per litre.

The government is under pressure to meet financial commitments under the IMF program. The IMF has asked Pakistan to reduce fuel subsidies and depend more on tax collection. Petroleum levies remain one of the key tools for raising revenue.

Officials said the government has assured the IMF that economic reforms will continue. These reforms are aimed at improving financial discipline and stabilizing the economy.

In recent months, Petrol Price in Pakistan has risen sharply. Global oil market uncertainty and regional tensions have added pressure on fuel rates. However, experts say local taxes are also a major reason behind the increase.

Last week, petrol rates climbed close to Rs393 per litre. The increase caused strong public reaction across the country. Many citizens expressed concern over rising living costs.

Higher fuel prices have increased transport costs. This has made daily travel more expensive for many people. Motorcycle riders, rickshaw drivers, and small car owners are among the most affected.

Online delivery riders and low-income workers say their monthly budgets are under heavy pressure. Rising fuel costs are also increasing the prices of basic goods.

Diesel prices are also expected to rise. This may affect freight transport, farming, and industrial supply chains. Experts warn it could lead to higher prices across the economy.

Trade unions have criticized the expected Petrol Price increase. They say workers are already struggling with higher electricity, gas, and food costs. They have urged the government to review fuel policies and provide relief to the public.
