The United Kingdom is preparing to introduce a new AI-powered age estimation system at its borders starting next year. The technology is designed to help officials identify adult migrants who may falsely claim to be children when seeking asylum.
According to reports, the system will use photographs taken at border entry points to estimate a person’s age. The technology has been developed by a private software company under a contract with the UK Home Office.
Officials say the new AI tool will support the initial age assessment process. The goal is to improve accuracy and reduce cases where adults are incorrectly treated as minors.
The UK Home Office stated that early testing of the technology has shown promising results. Authorities believe the system could help identify people attempting to misuse asylum procedures by claiming to be under 18.
However, the proposal has sparked debate among human rights organizations. Critics argue that AI age estimation technology is still developing and may not always produce reliable results.
Human Rights Watch has called on the UK government to reconsider the project. The organization warned that inaccurate assessments could affect vulnerable children seeking protection and support.
Under current UK policies, unaccompanied migrant children receive special care from local authorities. They are also granted legal protections and access to services that are different from those available to adults.
The planned rollout comes as the UK continues to face pressure from rising asylum applications. Many of these applications are linked to migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats.
Official data shows that more than 111,000 people applied for asylum in the UK during the year ending June 2025. Government figures also revealed that over 6,400 individuals who claimed to be children underwent age assessments in the year ending March 2026.
According to the data, around 43 percent of those assessed were later found to be adults. These figures have increased concerns about the accuracy of current age determination methods.
A previous government inspectorate report noted that age assessment remains an uncertain process. The report stated that there is no single scientific test that can determine a person’s age with complete accuracy.
UK authorities have emphasized that the new AI system will not replace human judgment. Instead, it will act as an additional tool to support decision-making during border screenings.

Despite government assurances, concerns about reliability, fairness, and human rights implications continue to fuel debate over the planned technology rollout.
