MAKKAH: The annual ceremony to replace the Ghilaf-e-Kaaba was held at Masjid al-Haram in Saudi Arabia. The event is one of the most significant religious traditions associated with the Holy Kaaba and attracts attention from Muslims around the world.
The new Ghilaf-e-Kaaba, also known as the Kiswah, has been prepared at a cost of approximately seven million Saudi Riyals. The cover is crafted using premium materials and reflects a long-standing tradition that has been maintained for centuries.
According to official details, the new covering contains 670 kilograms of pure silk. It is also decorated with 120 kilograms of gold and 100 kilograms of silver. These materials are carefully woven into the fabric to create intricate Islamic designs and Quranic inscriptions.
The word “Kiswah” comes from the Arabic language and means a garment or covering. In Islamic tradition, the term specifically refers to the black silk cloth that covers the Holy Kaaba. The Ghilaf-e-Kaaba is made from high-quality black silk and is supported by a strong inner cotton lining. This lining helps preserve the structure and durability of the outer fabric.
The covering consists of 47 separate silk panels. Each panel measures approximately 98 centimeters in width and 14 meters in length. Skilled craftsmen work throughout the year to prepare and assemble these pieces before the annual replacement ceremony.
One of the most striking features of the Ghilaf-e-Kaaba is its gold-embroidered Quranic verses. The black silk is decorated with beautiful calligraphy that includes verses from the Holy Quran and phrases praising Allah. The detailed embroidery highlights the craftsmanship involved in producing the sacred covering.
The Kiswah also includes a special belt-like section that wraps around the Kaaba. This band measures 46 meters in length and 95 centimeters in width. It is made from 16 separate pieces and is also embroidered with Quranic verses using gold and silver threads.
The annual replacement of the Ghilaf-e-Kaaba symbolizes respect and care for Islam’s holiest site. The ceremony is carried out with great precision and reverence, reflecting the spiritual importance of the Holy Kaaba for millions of Muslims worldwide.
