SBP Declares Nationwide Bank Holiday as New Fiscal Year Begins on July 1

ISLAMABAD โ€“ The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has announced a nationwide bank holiday on July 1, 2026, marking the beginning of the new Fiscal Year. Customers planning to visit bank branches on that day are advised to make arrangements in advance.

According to the central bank, public dealings will remain suspended on July 1. As a result, all commercial banks, Development Finance Institutions (DFIs), and Microfinance Banks (MFBs) across the country will not provide customer-facing services during the holiday.

The announcement means that branch-based banking activities, including cash deposits, withdrawals, account services, and other over-the-counter transactions, will not be available to customers on the designated day. Individuals and businesses that depend on in-person banking services may experience temporary inconvenience.

However, banking operations will not completely stop. The SBP clarified that employees of banks, DFIs, and MFBs will continue to attend work as usual. Staff members will carry out internal functions related to the start of the new Fiscal Year.

These activities include financial closing procedures, reconciliation of accounts, record verification, and other administrative tasks. Such measures are necessary to ensure a smooth transition into the upcoming financial cycle.

The annual bank holiday is observed every year at the start of the Fiscal Year. It allows financial institutions to complete year-end accounting requirements and prepare their systems for the new reporting period. Officials believe this process helps maintain accuracy and efficiency within the banking sector.

Customers are encouraged to plan important transactions before July 1 to avoid delays. Those requiring banking services during the holiday can use digital channels such as mobile banking applications, internet banking platforms, ATMs, and other electronic payment services where available.

The SBP’s announcement serves as an important reminder for individuals and businesses to manage their banking needs ahead of time. With branch operations closed for public dealings, customers should ensure that urgent payments, transfers, and financial transactions are completed before the holiday.

The temporary closure is part of routine annual procedures and is intended to support financial institutions as they begin the new Fiscal Year with updated records and completed accounting formalities.
