CATL Launches World’s First Commercial Sodium-Ion Battery System for Energy Storage

CATL Launches World’s First Commercial Sodium-Ion Battery System for Energy Storage

CATL Launches a major breakthrough in battery technology with the unveiling of its new sodium-ion energy storage system. The Chinese battery giant introduced the TENER Sodium system in Munich, Germany, on June 22, 2026.

The company says this is the world’s first field-tested sodium-ion battery storage system ready for large-scale commercial use. CATL Launches the new technology as part of its push to expand clean energy solutions worldwide.

According to the company, the TENER Sodium system has passed real-world testing and is now ready for production. Deliveries in China are expected to begin in September 2026, while international shipments will start in June 2027.

The system offers more than 30 MWh of storage capacity through a modular design. Each module weighs around 42 tonnes. CATL said only 34 modules are needed for a 1 GWh energy storage site.

CATL Launches this system with flexible options for one-hour to eight-hour storage use. This allows operators to adjust the setup according to project needs.

The company said the battery can complete 15,000 charging cycles at 25°C before dropping to 70 percent health. This gives it an estimated service life of 25 to 30 years.

The system also performs well in extreme temperatures. It can handle over 10,000 cycles at 45°C and keeps over 92 percent capacity at minus 20°C.

Safety is one of the key features of the new battery. CATL said sodium-ion cells reduce gas generation and lower the risk of fires compared to lithium-ion batteries.

The company also introduced a new voltage regulation system to improve efficiency. This technology can increase round-trip efficiency by nearly 2 percent.

CATL said sodium-ion batteries may reduce global dependence on lithium. Sodium is much more common and cheaper than lithium.
