The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has unveiled a major renewable energy project for the next fiscal year. KMC Announces a Rs. 750 million solarization initiative aimed at improving energy efficiency across Karachi.
The new project will cover union committees, public streets, municipal buildings, and selected roads in the city. Officials say the plan will support sustainable urban development and reduce dependence on traditional electricity.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the solarization plan will help lower operational costs. It will also ensure uninterrupted civic services, especially in areas facing frequent power outages.
According to the mayor, KMC Announces this project as part of its larger strategy to modernize public infrastructure. He said climate resilience and clean energy have become necessary for responsible city management.
The mayor explained that KMC started shifting toward renewable energy over two years ago. This began with its street-lighting program, where nearly 50 streetlights were distributed to every union committee without political preference.
Officials said more than Rs. 110 million has already been spent in the current fiscal year on improving street-lighting systems in Karachi. These efforts have enhanced public safety and improved visibility on roads.
Major roads like Sharea Faisal, Shahrah-e-Firdousi, and Shahrah-e-Iran have also seen better lighting and urban improvements.
KMC has already solarized parts of its head office. Officials said this move has helped cut electricity bills and reduce environmental damage.
Following these results, KMC Announces plans to expand solar systems to more offices, union committee buildings, and public facilities.
The project is expected to benefit remote and electricity-dependent areas where load shedding remains a major problem.
Mayor Wahab said the current administration is focused on action instead of just making promises. He added that people can judge KMC based on visible progress in roads, parks, lighting, governance, and public services.
